Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin called Egg Head, "One of the best horses I ever trained." That is high praise considering that McLaughlin only started the colt once, in the Riva Ridge Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park on June 11. In that race, Egg Head gave everything he had to come within a length and a quarter of the undefeated and unchallenged (until then) Lost in the Fog. Shortly after that race, Egg Head was discovered to be lame in his left hind leg. Despite quick and thorough treatment, the three-year-old colt foundered and was euthanized after two weeks of struggle. Previously, Egg Head was trained by Lynda Knee. Under her care he started six times and won four of those, including an impressive romp in the LaBelle Memorial Stakes in May, where he won by over nine lengths. In his career he earned $145,420 for main owner Harvey Clark. Egg Head was by Honor Grades and was out of the Screen King mare Redding Ridge. He has a two-year-old sister by Bianconi named Last Hoot and an unnamed yearling sister by Sir Cat.
