Intercontinental wins Jenny Wiley off layoff

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Jerry Bailey had his hands full riding Intercontinental in the early stages of Sunday's Grade 3, $200,000 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland. But when it mattered most - in the stretch - it was her opponents that could not handle her.
Intercontinental, racing for the first time since winning the Grade 1 Matriarch in November, won the Jenny Wiley for the second straight year, winning by a length over Delta Princess. She gave Bailey his third consecutive Jenny Wiley victory, and trainer Bobby Frankel his fourth straight victory in the race.
Although a comfortable winner, Intercontinental ($3.40) gave her supporters cause for concern in the first turn. Hard held in third behind a slow pace set by Sister Star and Sister Swank, she tossed her head repeatedly, bouncing Bailey back and force in the saddle.
Frustrated with fighting her, he turned her loose down the backstretch, and she quickly accelerated to make the lead. Once there, she pricked her ears forward and relaxed, carving out fractions of 49.01 seconds and 1:13.08.
Her early tussle with Bailey had no impact on her trademark finishing kick. Asked to quicken nearly the stretch, she responded - finishing her next quarter in 22.96 seconds and her final sixteenth in 5.85 seconds. She finished 1 1/16 miles on a firm course in 1:41.89.
"Maybe we'll make a speed horse out of her," quipped Bailey.
While headstrong behavior is typical from her, the extent that she fought him was more severe than usual. "She wasn't doing it my way," he said. "She I had to defer to her."
Intercontinental, a 5-year-old Danehill mare owned by Juddmonte Farm, recorded her ninth victory in 16 starts in winning the Jenny Wiley. The $124,000 winner's prize boosted her earnings to over $905,000.
"She's a very good filly, very talented," Frankel said.
Delta Princess, winner of the Endeavor Stakes in her last start at Tampa Feb. 26, rallied smartly behind the slow pace to outfinish the rest of the pack for the place. Sister Swank, who chased the winner for much of the race, was 1.25 lengths further back in third.
River Belle, Katdogawn, Sister Star and High Court completed the order of finish.
