Funny Cide Breezes in Return to Belmont; nearing returnBloodhorse.comSackatoga Stable's 5-year-old Funny Cide, back at Belmont Park after a winter in Florida, breezed six furlongs in a bullet 1:13 Friday on the fast main track under trainer Barclay Tagg's assistant, Robin Smullen. "It was a very good work for him, and he did it the right way, going his first quarter in :24 4/5," Smullen said. "He got in around 11 a.m. on Monday, he jogged Tuesday and Wednesday, galloped on Thursday, and had this nice work today. He's is doing very well." Back when Funny Cide was re-writing history during his 3-year-old campaign, Smullen continually stated that the New York-bred Distinctive Humor gelding would get better with age. She has not backed off that opinion. "He is so strong right now," she said. "Not just in how he is training, but how he looks. He is just massive." Funny Cide won the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness (gr. I) as a 3-year-old in 2003 and captured the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) at Belmont Park last year. Funny Cide seems to be a likely candidate for the $75,000-added Kings Point Handicap on May 1. The nine-furlong race for New York-breds would serve as a prep for his main goal this spring, the $500,000 Pimlico Special (gr. I) at nine and a half furlongs at Pimlico Race Course in Maryland on May 20.
